Cycle Scheme

Central London bike hire scheme

The aim of the central London bike hire scheme is similar to the Paris scheme, with 6,000 bikes at docking stations every 300m so that people will have quick and easy access to a bike. There will also be a series of easy cycle routes so that people can enjoy London by bike.

There will also be twelve radial Cycling Corridors for commuters to provide high profile, easy to follow cycling into the centre of London, plus the creation of a series of ‘Bike Zones’ for shoppers and parents doing the school run in Inner and Outer London, consisting of cycle priority streets, 20mph speed limits and routes that link local destinations, parks and waterways for cyclists.

The Mayor of London also intends to expand the ‘Legible London Signage System’ to help people make trips around the capital on foot, rather than driving or taking public transport. These ‘high quality walking facilities’ will consist of improved pavements, improved seating and crossings, and will be called ‘200 Streets of Gold’.

"Look out for a brand new bike, Cycle to Work leaflet in your pay packet."

Cycle to Work is a tax incentive aimed at encouraging employees to cycle to work, reducing pollution and improving their health. This scheme allows employees to benefit from a long term loan of bikes and equipment such as lights, locks and panniers tax free.

Employers benefit from fitter, more punctual, more wide-awake staff.

Employees benefit from better health and better bikes. With a budget of around £300, an employee can now afford a bike, plus accessories, worth nearly £600.

The typical saving for an average tax-payer is around 40 per cent. There are online calculators to help you see how much you can save.
